Happy New Year!
I hope you didn’t make any resolutions.
Well, I hope you didn’t make any of the usual suspects of resolutions (you know the ones). Here’s what I hope instead:
As the year turns to the next, I hope that you feel into the things that bring you the most joy. The things that bring the most of what makes you YOU to the surface.
The things that only you can bring in the way that you bring them- because that’s what will make the world a little brighter. And that's what we all need right now.
If you are someone (like me) who does like a little structure or action plan to bring what’s in my head out into the world- here’s what I am thinking about as I go into 2025.
I’m thinking about Little Becky. The me that was in the world in the 1980’s. The me that was me before I knew what the world thought I “should” be and do and say. I mean, we all experience outside influences as soon as we are born, but I think you get the idea- the you that was the most unselfconsciously YOU.
What brought that small human the most joy?
Where did you feel the most yourself?
Consider thinking about those things. And then just choose one small way to honor that part of you (it’s still there after all!) and do that thing today, or tomorrow or when you can.
It's very tempting to want to say you're going to do that thing EVERYDAY FOR THE WHOLE YEAR or some version of that (or at least it’s tempting for me)- in other words, to try to put it into resolution format.
But that’s not really necessary. Do that one thing today or tomorrow or whenever you can. If it brings you joy and makes you feel more alive and Who You Really Are, try to do it again!
What truly lights you up- from the soles of your feet to the top of your head?
Whatever that is also lights up the world.
Because when you are lit up with the truth of who you are it shines out and other people see it and feel it. And it gives them permission to do the same.
And who knows where the ripples of that will end? I don't think they ever do!
In closing, I read this poem today by Spanish poet Antonio Machado and I loved it; so I share it with you as well.
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a spring was breaking
out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
water of a new life
that I have never drunk?
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that I had a beehive
here inside my heart.
And the golden bees
were making white combs
and sweet honey
from my old failures.
Last night as I was sleeping,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.
Last night as I slept,
I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
here inside my heart.
This year, I wish you all the things that bring a smile to your face and ignite the “fiery sun giving light inside your heart.”

I am participating in Birdtober! There are a few Birdtober art challenges happening this month- I am participating in the one hosted by Kayla Fisk Birds. I’m really happy I stumbled on this bird art challenge. I love all the other October challenges, but it always comes back to birds for me. :) Especially since I have another show scheduled at Seward Park Audubon in January!

This week as I sat with my coffee, I had a revelation.
This is a big word and one might find the revelation that I had small and rather obvious, but sometimes a concept that you already know can hit differently one day and become...a revelation.
